« on: December 13, 2017, 08:07:57 PM »

It would be interesting to see what other Turners have kept over the years as there favourites .
   These are some of ours.
Please feel free to show which pieces you have kept on this thread.
   Kind Regards Tony & Di

My very first attempt to set semi-precious stones into the rim pf a platter....a fine piece of spalted beech that holds a different picture every time you look at it.
It's far from perfect, but I'd been turning for only 14 months when I got rid of my old Coronet and bought the Record Maxi, so I was itching to have a go at something bigger than what I'd been used to.

Les

p.s. ... we also have numerous experimental pieces that never made it onto a shop shelf!
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

One piece I kept as it was the very first thing I made on a lathe some 45+ years ago when I still was at school(when they use to allow this)

A little worse for wear

Quick snap shot.Did this about 10 years ago. Disc is a slice of macrocarpa and the pillar is chestnut. I gold leafed it about 5 years ago. Disc is approx 14" dia.

hello Tony & Di and a merry Christmas to you
I kept this piece called 'Reflections of...' because they were the 3rd and 4th platters I turned and just happened to be facing cuts through the main crotch of a cherry trunk. When I looked at the finished items side by side the frame just suggested itself. The piece was entered along side my club's  other 4 entries for the Border Woodturner's annual Open inter-club competition in 2015 and I was told that the judge (nameless) asked why someone had brought a mirror to a woodturning competition.

Have an even better 2018   Regards Nick

I do have others I kept but only to show my journey throgh what I have made. These however are very few where as the egg cups and stand was something which realy was what was at the very beginning to my love of working with wood.
