Different bowl

I have experimented with this shape before, and I think this time it came out quite well. This is a piece of some maple species that, if memory serves, came from Steve Earis (seventhdevil on the forum). Could be field maple. With beautiful grain like this, there is not much point in complicated shapes or colours. It's about 11" across and 1.5" high. Finished in wax.
This piece now lives in our lounge, and my wife will not let it go.

I think you need to photograph this in better light , its somewhat dark

that's a bit of sycamore. field maple has very small rays compared  to that. also i don't have any timber that sort of size so i'm not sure that you got that particular bit from me?

either way it's a lovely bowl. a shape i've frequently turned for the thinner blank.

The shape is not to my taste (or lack of it). It reminds me of the big ash trays that we use to have in the pubs back in the seventy's.

The finish is to your normal high standards and if your wife loves it then it's the best bit of turning that you can do

Big ashtray! I am just about to hop into my car and drive all across the country! :-)

Yeah, the association is there to be had. Others have remarked that they had dog bowls that looked like that. I suppose you never can get it right for everybody. Sigh!

I can see what everyone is saying, but possibly that's because how we think of bowls, a rising side and hollow interior shape to match.

For it's size I think this works and will look great as a (you don't say what the good lady uses it for) fruit bowl, but it will need to have grapes or bananas etc., spilling over the bowl rim to work well.
