it looks to me like a storebought minilathe with a home bodged headstock. I wonder what happened to the original to make the conversion necessary and/or worthwhile?

I have set a joke competition in our club to find how many 'hazards' are evident on this contraption. Two key ones have already been spotted by APH. Why would anyone bother either bodging something like this, or, worse still, try to sell it on to some unsuspecting buyer. It costs more than a good, bona-fide second hand lathe.

No, look closely. Those lathe bed bars are square aluminium box section with steel plates bolted on top.
It's definitely home made with a few bought in parts (tailstock/banjo/head bearing holders).

When there's so many genuine bargain lathes out there on eBay, no turner with any level of experience would be likely to touch this.
