cracking up ?
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:19:55 PM »
Just sanded a small bowl. Got a lovely finish but was disappointed to find lots of hairline cracks in the base inside. Were these caused by the friction when sanding? Only on the base not on the sides so I am thinking its heat.
What am I doing wrong?

Possably heat checks slow down sanding speed and dont press too hard.

You could try wet sanding with liquid paraffin slowly

Yup heat-related problems from over zealous sanding ... we have all done it :) is the most common reason. One of the ways to deal with it is to the offending area with CA or super glue, give a few hours to dry/harden up then fine sand back. If the timber if dark most of the hairline cracks etc will disappear.
