Morning all
Been given a bit of this wood from a local uni and was wondering if anyone knows what it is?

reminds me of some rowan that i've had but i'm not sure i'm right with that.

The outside of the bark does look like rowan, however for a piece of this size I would have expected a larger amount of dark heartwood. If you could give us a picture of the side grain and end grain, both sanded to about 240, that might help.

if it has the same weight (once dry) and consistency as lime or horsechestnut then it's rowan but if it is very heavy and rock hard then it may be whitebeam which is a brother species but the wood is quite different and does not have the darker heart you come to expect in rowan.

whitebeam is sorbus aria and rowan is sorbus aucuparia.
