Vase
« on: October 29, 2017, 08:00:00 AM »
Its been a long time since the last post. I havent been turning a lot some rather mundane utility stuff. But heres one I have just finished today done with Antique Oil and buffed  30cm x 16.4cm in a local native timber called Blackwood or those who prefer the Latin :)  Acacia Melanoxylon . Concave flutes 13 in all, 10 major 3 minor.
This one and a few others that are slowly getting underway are for a major woodie contest early next year  AWTEX

Good to see your work again, Hughie.....something a little different this time, yet unmistakably yours.

Les
p.s. ... I bet your expenditure on abrasives is higher than mine! :)

Like it a lot. If I can find the patience to do all the abraisve work must have a go at this type of work in the new year.

Thank you, Gentlemen, are yes the abrasives...... yeah its been suggested I should have a sanding wench. But that would be politically incorrect.
I think I spend more time working through the concept than actually making it. This Blackwood is a bit stiff when it comes to sandpaper so you know you have had a workout and the layout, by comparison, is easy.

The competition is AWTEX  Australian Woodturners Exhibition in Melbourne  http://awtex.com.au/

This piece has largely influenced by the resurgence of the Art Nouveau movement, which sits well with me.

You could almost guess this was a Hughie piece without seeing your name against it.

The irregular dimensioned fluting with the perfect delineated edges, a finish that does not go over the top and swamp the work.

Hope it is well received at the show.

The feedback here and at another forum has such that I think it will do well
