You Wanted Colour....
« on: September 14, 2017, 06:45:54 PM »
Ed Oliver ;) ;D ;D ;D

After my last burr I did want colour to be added as well as a bit of banter from Ed I added colour to this one. I just experimented and to be honest I am not sure on it but the wife likes it so I will keep it.
Just for interest it is 7" X 2 1/14" sprayed with spirit stain and finished with Hard wax oil. It is a chestnut Burr
C & C welcome

Well Derek

We have certainly got colour  ;D ;D ;D

I not so sure on the colour mix but the colours do show off the burr nicely.

Lovely piece of wood and nice looking bowl  :)

All the best

Ed

A good bit of colouring as experiments go, but I can't help wondering how much better it might have looked with fewer colours or colours that complimented each other more than these. It's tricky with colour, because it's such personal taste!

Any one of the colours would be enopugh, as is oit looks too randome and too much especially with all that is naturallu going on with thu burr. Having said that you don't know until you try and so full marks for experimenting.

On a chestnut burr I would always use the colour to enhance the grain. It would seem to me you just sprayed it on top. The trick here really is to start with the darkest colour, give the whole piece (or a large section) a complete coat, and then sand it back so that only the soft bits retain some colour, then repeat with a lighter colour. In that way you will get a much more impressive result.
Search google images for "Phil Irons Urns"  and you will get some nice examples of what can be done. You are not far away from that.

With most Chestnut Burrs we tend to use a very diluted( 100 to 1 ) one dye only which allows you to see more of
the Burr without drowning it in colour ... some times using stains can over power the Burr so all you see is colour
and missing most  of the figure in the burr.
  Kind Regards

Really like this Derek, the colours for me enhance the interest in the burr.

Thank you everyone for all of the views on this piece. I have had a very mixed response to this bowl across a few forums that I am on. As I stated I was not sure on this one and still am in that position regards liking and not liking it.
At the end of the day I enjoyed experimenting with the colours but will certainly take on board all the different views. I still have a few ideas that I want to play with when the right piece of wood comes along.
