SIP lathes
« on: July 12, 2017, 07:48:15 PM »
Hi all,

So my plans to buy a second hand AWVSL1000 fell through unfortunately. I'm tempted to get a new one but the 3 week backlog is frustrating as I don't own a lathe yet. I stumbled upon these SIP lathes a few times while browsing but don't really know much about them or their reputation. Thoughts?

In my opinion they should only be considered if you are an occasional turner. If you intend to push them to the limit or if you intend to spend a lot of time on your lathe, I would not go down that road. The quality simply isn't there (not surprising for that money, TBH).
This is definitely a case of "it only hurts once". Spend a little more and you have a much wider range of decent machines.

i used to have one of these https://www.sipuk.co.uk/sip-48-variable-speed-swivel-head-wood-lathe-230v-01490.html and thought that they were fairly good but fuzzy is correct for the most part about the qualuty not being there.

i did lots of heavy duty work on mine but you do notice the difference once you get a good quality lathe. i moved up to a jet 3520B.

these were the biggest items i turned and it was too much thinking back. the lathe wobbled quite a bit but it was on a flexible wooden floor.
