Which lathe could be better
« on: May 03, 2017, 05:17:24 PM »
Dear woodturners,

I going to buy a wood lathe and I would like to know which lathe could be better.
First of all, I looking for a not have lathe since I am a travel, they needed to make big bowl and they could't occupied so much space.
So I check in the internet two diferent brand Record Power CL3 and Draper 750W 230V Digital Variable Speed.
Could you help me to think what could be the best under the conditions I presented to you?
Of course I accept other suggestions outside these two brands, in case they know of any warn me!

Record Power CL3:

Draper 750W 230V Digital Variable Speed:

Best wish,

Ps: bay the way, I live in London, if you know some one who want selling one of those lathe, let me know!

Rafael,

of the 2 you identify I'd suggest the Record.

But more importantly, can I suggest you find a local club and attend it. Have a chat and see a few lathes that people have before you make up your mind.

Strange thing about turning, you say you want to make big bowls, but it's more likely that you'll progress to other things once you've made a few and what you need in a lathe will change.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Of those two I'd agree with Bryan. Also whichever you get you would do well to follow his advise and join a club, get some hands on experience on different lathes if possible.

Many thanks for the tips!

I will consider the advertising mainly about the possibility of an other lathe after some progress.

But I don't know about those woodturners local club, how I can find one?

Cheers,
Rafael

Hello Rafael, I would suggest that you have a look at Axminsters website.
Mistakes are proof that at least you're trying

Check here Loads of clubs all over the country.
But none really in London. Middlesex turners in Northolt are probably the most central.
Generally London is poorly served by anything to do with Woodturning.

Haven't checked so didn't realise that.

The Record is probably the better option for bowl turning.
However both are quite big and will take up a fair bit of space.

I'm afraid your English isn't quite good enough to really understand your requirements, but if you haven't a settled base with space to work in if you're travelling, you might find it best to try to find a workshop you can rent time in.
I think there may be a few shared spaces in East London; Hackney, Walthamstow area. These will probably also have bigger lathes more suitable for you to turn big bowls too.

Rafael, you don't say whereabouts in London you are. My club is based in Cheam which is south west of central London and easily accessible by car or public transport. We would be pleased to see you and offer what help we can. Have a look at our website at www.cheamturners.co.uk

I agree London is a poor area for clubs but work is being done to remedy this.

As for space, try somewhere like South London Makers Space at Herne Hill who have a great wood working shop there. If that is not near you, then there might be others in your area.

The AWGB have a North London Group who meet in Muswell Hill.

Hope all this helps and I can assure you of a warm welcome if you visit Cheam.
