Olive Wood
« on: April 22, 2017, 09:12:58 PM »

I know you wont think much of the shapes but by the time I had turned all the rubbish off this is what I was left with.
The box and H/F were from Burrs on the tree .. The Pen Pot was from the root mass . Also got a lot of Pen Blanks
out of the rest of the Root Mass.
  Comments As Always Welcome.

Tony,

if there is one wood more interesting than Yew, it's Olive. But it is also a very functional wood, use for kitchen utensils a lot where it grows, so the plain functional shapes in the lower photo sit right for me, it's the hollowform which looks out of place.

In some ways Bryan I agree with you. Normally I would do  very plain stuff with olive wood, with the H/F piece
being so dark and not very exciting colour wise I could not think of anything else other than a cricket ball ;D ;D ;D
  Kind Regards Tony d

I think the issue with the HF is the amount of empty space you've left around the image, it looks tiny because of it.

I like the HF and feel that the swirls of the grain suit the form. Having read Bryan's comment about there being too much background in the photo, I did a screen-shot and cropped it (hope that's ok, Tony) and I must admit that it does help. One comment though, there's a lovely flowing curve from neck to base, but the width of the base causes the curve to suddenly stop....a smaller foot might have helped the curve to flow through it.

Thanks Les... Wish I knew how to do that..... think the angle of the pic as made the foot look bigger than it is.
In hindsight should have waited till I was awake to take the photo.  ;D... forgot again its 4 1/2" tall

  Kind Regards Tony d
