Blackwood
« on: February 10, 2017, 08:01:07 AM »
Havent posted for awhile, life is very busy and this is the last piece in a consignment to a local gallery. In the middle of a hotsummer with temps rising to 45C at times and dipping to 20C with rain storms with falls of 75mm in less than an hour.

This is part of a haul of Blackwood from a very large tree that came down in a major rain storm. Normally associated with Tasmania  http://www.tastimber.tas.gov.au/SpeciesDetailsGeneral.aspx?SpeciesID=3 This tree grew in the Southern Highlands of NSW, a very similar climate and only a hours drive from me. Its a native and the premier Australian  timber for furniture and indoor pieces.

20cm dia by 15cm , finished with Antique oil from Minwax and buffed while wet.

Comments , critique etc welcome

The simple beauty of that piece conceals the truth of the number of hours that you must dedicate to it.

Very appealing, and you make it look so easy (yet I know how much hard work goes into these spiral decorations).

Thank for the positive comments Blackwood looks great but it does have its problems, tear out at time resembles chunk out thanks to the swirly grain structure. :)

I like this as I do with all of the spiral ones you have done in the past.
