Just Wood
« on: December 19, 2016, 08:17:23 PM »

Tom and I took this tree down in Malvern some years ago and to our surprise and joy it turned out to be Brown Tiger
Oak. This piece was rough turned when we got it and the other day I decided I would return and finish it , got
this idea from previous post stress.
Comments as always are welcome.. Kind Regards Tony d

Regretfully, Tony, your design is not original....it's already been done by the good people of Guernsey in there bid to defend themselves against invasion....

....having said that, your effort is a darned side more elegant and sits more easily on the mantle-shelf. Nice one, and a cracking piece of tiger oak.

       :) :) :) ;D ;D ;D ;D............. Don't think our floors would support that one Les. Think I`ll stick with the vase

its a lot lighter , and takes up less space.

The vase had been sat outside in the shed for a good few years and wanted to try the idea, this shape fit the bill for

When looking at it Ed.. Look for the second brick up on your Left behind  all the greenery.
There after a lot of searching you will find our initials carved on it.
Best Wishes Tony di  ;) ;D

Tony,

A very unusual level of post work, but it works extremely well and gives a whole new perspective to the simple form you've turned.

Bryan Hoping to take the theme further with  double lines of cuts, but using a more stable piece of wood... I`m sure
there are more combinations to try..... here are 2 method pics on how its done  just add a couple of spots of hot
melt glue to hold in place. In case anyone would like to try.
    Many Thanks .. Tony d

I think that I would turn a wooden plug to fit inside the rim of the pot, with a centre-hole in it, and screw it, through the centre hole, onto the backing plate.

My hat's off to you.
I honestly thought you'd cut it on a table saw and must admit I did try and envisage the jig to hold it steady and safely.

For the next one I was thinking of turning a off centre hole as I did get a bit of variation in the start cut , but after your
suggestion I think I will go for the bung +( hot melt  :) as it will require less compression from the tail stock this Les is
what the forum is all about ideas.

Thank You Bryan.. the saw sounds a bit frightening  ;) :).... but I am sure that a hand saw with a steady hand would
     achieve the same effect.

I would also like to say to others any Off Centre Turning Requires a Full Face Mask and Slow Speed
