London Plain
« on: September 29, 2016, 04:57:02 PM »

Me & Tom ( flames )...got hold of a London plane tree about 4 weeks ago. Tom Planked it Pic No5.. you can`t see me
I`m making the tea... ( oh its a hard world. )... sprayed the planks with Borax as soon as possible it helps stop
discolouration the end grain coated with PVA then painted to stop dirt ingress and cracking. These 2 pieces were microwaved
over one week...... The Platter pic 1 was taken with the flash but although it has brought out more lace it has bleached
the colour ,pic2 was taken with  photographic lights ...... The vase is this shape because that is what was asked for, its been
coated on the inside with Treatex Hardwax Oil inside so it could hold water, they are both finished with Danish oil.
   As Always Comments Welcome
    Regards Tony d

A couple of lovely platters there, Tony. I haven't seen that pink tinge in plane before, and the idea of the borax sounds interesting...does it inhibit fungal growth?

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thanks Derek.... Its been a real treat to turn......got to be the easiest wood I`ve turned in a long time, but
I did have to put a bung in the vase to keep it round while it dried.

Thanks Les.. We cut up a very large Sycamore Tree some time ago which stained very badly , Toms on the other hand
stayed a lot cleaner after treating with borax ..... the spec sheet on it says it prohibits woodworm and fungal growth.
Having just cut up a large horse chestnut which stains very quickly I have coated it all over with borax also some maple
which can also stain badly........We got a lot of burr from the top of the tree which is quite red ... looking forward
    to turning that.
    Regards Tony
