burr elm winged bowl.

this is one of the burrs I was given the other week. I have turned it as the winged bowl to get the best out of it. all comments welcome. the bowl is 20x10x3" in size.

I find the overall shape, as seen from above, and the bead around the bowl rim both are very pleasing, but in profile I don't like the way that the wings thicken towards the ends, it makes them look much too heavy.

I'm with Les really I like the bowl from the top but not so keen from the side, the thickening of the wings take away from the piece.

thank you will have to re mount this and get the thickness down on the wings and will re post when I have completed it.

Firstly: very nice piece of wood you got there.
Secondly: yes, the wings should be even thickness
Thirdly: I'd leave this piece alone if I were you. Now that the wings have been turned to final thickness on the part closest to the bowl itself, you'll find that even at high speed they will flex, and if you remount this and try and improve it, all you'll do is ruin it.

This is one of those things where you get one chance only.

Sand the top back to bare wood, hot glue a board across it and mount it on that. You can then turn (carefully) the underside to an even thickness. The hot glue doesn't affect the wood and can be removed afterwards. It works as I have done it myself. It will stop the wings flexing.

I agree with the comments above. In addition I'd suggest a more defined line between the bowl rim/edge and the wings.
I have done these in the past on a smaller scale and can appreciate the skill involved (not to mention the courage) in attempting such pieces.

well I have been back in the shed with this bowl and hopefully I have completed it to a better finish on the wings. I was able to turn the wings with very fine cuts using a 3/8 fingernail grind bowl gouge. here is the finished bowl. all comments welcome.
