What direction of grinder rotation
« on: September 12, 2016, 11:48:32 AM »
As the title says 'What direction of grinder rotation'.

It might sound like a strange question but does the direction the wheel rotates, with respect to the tool, make any difference?

To explain;

My Dry Grinder rotates onto the tip of my tool, abrading from the tip to the heel of the bevel angle.

My Wet wheel however I use from the other side, such that it abrades from the heel to the tip of the bevel angle.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Usually the wet grinders can be used backwards because they also have a leather honing wheel, which must be used running away from the edge. You can use the solid wheels, (stone, diamond, cbn etc.) in either direction.

I have an old grinder I converted to a honing machine by reversing the motor and switching the stone wheels for felt wheels.

I prefer grinders that turn away from you,my homemade dry 8" slow grinder can rotate in both directions,but seems to leave a better edge when rotating away.
welcome to my woodturning world

With a traditional grinding wheel running away, you wouldn't get a fine wire-edge on the top of a scraper!

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.
