Just Wood
« on: September 17, 2016, 07:05:51 PM »

Me and Tom ( Flames ) got the chance to cut up 3 trees in the last  month all 3 over 200 years.... Walnut...London Plane
and Horse Chestnut... all with burr... The Hollow Forms are  the Walnut Burr which I microwaved dry over a week and
finished in Danish Oil.... The Photo of the Walnut bowl was taken to show the contrasting colours when rough turned wet
Its a great partnership I have with Tom he does all the work and I sort out all the good bits  :) :)
    As Always Comments Are Welcome.
    Kind Regards Tony di

Tony,

I've always loved the occasional walnut tree you get with the almost white growth wood. The dramatic contrast it creates with the wonderfully dark heart wood makes a bold statement.

The vase and the especially the bowl carry that dramatic effect brilliantly.

Not so sure about the middle picture, it does not have your normal elegance to it which is a shame as its a nice looking piece of timber.

Well, so much drama in just a few pieces...some of those colours are to die for, especially the contrasts within the walnut.

Thanks Les..... The Burr part is very white sapwood but sometimes darkens when drying as pic2 so had to cheat
a bit  :) :) ... luckily the disturbance from the burr has disturbed the heart wood giving a dramatic effect.

Tony I could see the bowl was not finished, it still has the tenon. But the colour differences will still be there when it's done.

Also I've looked again, and I'm seeing the swirls as if they were the storms that rage across the face of Jupiter, love that effect.

Like the first vase but that bowl once complete is going to be a stunner. Some great grain in all of them

some really nice timber in that walnut. you did well to find one over 200 years old as they are usually dying or rotten by that age. i had a 30"+ tree and it was only 150 years max and starting to rot at the base.

you get some beautiful colours out of trees that age don't you.

how many bowls/blanks did you get from the walnut?

Thank You  Bryan .. Ed.... Tony ....Derek for viewing and your comments.
Ed.... make a start on those trunks. :)

Steve... It was a very old tree held up with heavy duty chains and scaffolding ..... it was rotten up one side of the
trunk .... but some of the boughs were a good 18"diameter, luckily it was on the deck when we got it. Have posted a
couple of photos.... no1 is the first load very dark good wood.... no2 the rest some good dark wood and spalted wood
will be letting it dry now over the winter.
         Thanks Guys Regards Tony d
