Not woodturning I know but....
« on: December 03, 2015, 01:57:13 PM »
Not woodturning I know but I thopught I would share this with you anyway. I have just been asked to price up making a scaled down model of a Spitfire that will be placed on a plinth at the entrance to a park somewhere (I'm not saying where just yet) If I remember right from my days IN the ATC the wingspan was about 34 feet or there abouts so I am thinking of scaling it down to a wing span of approx 17 feet so half full scale.
Nonetheless an exciting project to work on.

You could turn the nose cone!!  Sounds like a fab project John.  Take some piccys and write it up for Revs.  Perhaps we could post it on the website as well?

Cheers Dave

Sounds like a good excuse to get close up and personal with a real one.

An awful big job though.

Not sure of the construction as yet, I might make ribs and cover them in skin ply, paint it and then fibre glass it for protection. I will wait and see if they get the funding before putting too much work in though. Of course I could just glue balsa wood together and just make a giant kit like I used to do as a kid. ;D ;D ;D ;D

if you go the giant kit route i would recommend ceiba rather than balsa as it's alot stronger but still very light at 18lbft3.

i also know where you can get obeche for the props.

How about getting a RC Kit and scaling up the parts inside. Some of the kits are very detailed and may make the cutting of parts etc easier........ Wasn't there a James may program about making a full size Airfix kit on the TV some time ago.
