A pair of somthing

  Tony as not done a lot of turning lately. A couple of weeks ago he decided to have a go at something a bit more contemporary.
  The lizard and Frog are Pewter cast by Tony, they are turned from 2 pieces of burr oak and the base is hollow.
  they are 5 x 5 1/2"

Interesting concept pieces. I see them really appealing to interior decorators as focal pieces.

Trying to see how you've done the top sections. I did a vase with similar last year, told everyone it was done with a one sided skew (really called a bevel chisel - yes I turned with one) but they were not as deep a cut-in as your's, so I'll have to think about that a bit (unless you did them on a saw-table).

    Difficult to do  with a one sided skew me thinks Bryan .... much easier with a parting tool.

I could not get a clean finish with a parting tool, which is why I used a chisel as a skew.

I also have to ask why the frog and lizard? But hey

Bryan I saw a tip at the seminar about sharpen the parting tool instead of holding the tool horizontal when sharpening lay the tool over vertical so the sides are sharpen as well makes for a cleaner cut with the parting tool. Not tried it yet not been back at the lathe since the seminar.

......but I have to ask, 'Why not'? This is a fine pair of contemporary pieces that need to stand together (no good putting one each end of the mantle piece!) for them to really work. I see the tops as lily pads and the creatures bring them to life.

I like these. Both contemporary and 'old'

The frog and lizard decoration was very popular during the late Victorian period, especially on Royal Worcester ceramics.

   Thanks Very Much Ed..... we did debate what to put on the top the pieces looked a bit lost as they were and a finial
    did not suit so we decided to use Fred & Liz as we have used both in the past.

Good to see some more of your work on the forum, I was wondering where you had been. Like these very much, my preference would be a smaller base/tucked in to lighten the connection with the table. This however is a preference for me/my taste so not a negative.

I really like them. A very interesting way to create a pair, yet opposite, with the contrasting woods.
Not sure about the frogs though. I don't think they add anything to the piece.
