Poplar with light stain
« on: August 10, 2015, 02:58:42 PM »

We did this one a while ago but delayed posting ..... cannot get the photo right..... anyway here goes
The Amphora is Poplar with a light stain...... trying for a marbled look.... on a stained and silver gilded base.
   Comments as always welcome.

I'd say that you pretty-much got the marbled look that you were aiming for, which goes well with the base.....all in all, a very attractive piece.

Beautiful piece. The light staining shows of the figuring to perfection. Well done. Malcolm.

Tony, Di,

the effect of marbling is there, but not so sure about the cradle of the base.

Nothing wrong with either but Amphora's were that shape to be set in sand to hold them upright so laid over without reason (e.g. your sea series of some time ago) leaves it a little barren to my eyes, I think it needs just a small embellishment somewhere.

Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

Its been a difficult one to photograph, been on with it for what seems like an age, still not showing it at its best.
    But I did try ;D ;D

  Thank You Bryan...Much Appreciated

We have been Updating Our Web Site...... and also going through some old memorabilia...... after finding some old photos of our

many trips to Greece and a Marble Quarry... then finding some poplar that we would hopefully get to look a bit like Marble,

we thought we would give it a go. Its been a difficult one to get the ruggedness of a Quarry and the realistic look of marble
   Thanks Again
     Regards Di Tony

I love it but there is one tiny little thing that makes it jar for me. Pieces like this always make me think they are meant to be on the seabed, the base looks  fine but perhaps the amphora would look a bit more natural if it had settled at a slight angle ?
Regards
Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Graham Unfortunately the photo does not show the piece very well ...... it is on a slight slant but no matter what angle
I took the photo from it did not show.     Think photography lessons are needed  :) :)

Thanks Again Guys for your time taken to view and comment

This is absolutely wizard, stunning, striking as a marble effect, well balanced, thought out and executed as always ...   8) ...

Now on the wizard .. the guy's trapped in the form ... face, eyes, nose and pointed hat ... or is the piece bewitching ..

Cheers for sharing.  David
