Don't blame the vacuum chuck, blame the leaky earth on your Axi lathes which keeps tripping my power too. Also get yourself a non return valve on the pump and it won't happen. I don't think the bowl was gonna be that good anyhow.  :D :D :D :D :D

Bob Chapman has a good system to prevent vac loss during a power cut. He used to have details on his website. Basically it was a vac reservoir using an old milk churn.

Shame about the bowl.

Leaky earth is a worry...is it from the motor PS?

I say it is a leaky earth Andy, but to be far I know nothing much about electrikery, if you turn the workshop power on and then switch on the lathe at the plug it sometimes trips, not always.

But speaking to an electrician about it, quite a few devices will leak some power to earth but if other machines are on this can trip a sensitive trip switch, but is not so I have been informed dangerous at all. My, well Georges lathe has been checked in my workshop and found to be fine/safe.

I also get a trip when I put my compound saw on which I can not run from my workshop as the surge is also too high for my trip.

|Best you sort the electrics out before you use it again George.

However, look at the broken bowl again. it might be usable as part of a sculpture, or something.

The electrics are OK it is because these are three phase with inverters it does not happen often so is not really a problem.

The problem with the electrics tripping could be a very slightly loose neutral somewhere on the circuit.   I had the same problem some time ago and an electrician told me to check all connections are tight.   I checked every connection and one of the screws on the neutral side turned about 1/16 of a turn, never had the problem again.

There is nothing wrong with the electrics I have three of these lathes and they all very occasionally trip the electrics it is not a problem.

another idea would be to super glue it to the chuck to prevent it falling off  ;D  - are you sure the electric went and that you never put the chuck over the hole in the bowl  :D
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

That was not the fault of the chuck it was my fault because I know these lathes will occasionally trip the electric. In future I will make sure the lathe is turned on before the chuck.
