Hi Tony & Di

Well you certainly fulfilled your brief - That's what you call a large chunky bowl, what a whopper!  :)

I love the way you have left the natural edge on the piece and that gentle curve that leads down to it.  A great bowl thank you for showing it to us.

I hope you don't mind me asking but what sort of lathe do you run to turn something of this size?

Kind regards

David

I absolutely love the run of the grain and way the bowl falls away from the center - very unique - well done!

Thank You z3ddie...... Thought the bowl would look better with a slight curve to give a more flowing look, hopefully showing
off more of the wood. Our thoughts were perhaps a normal shaped bowl could look a bit out of place on such a large table.

Hi Tony

I keep looking at this bowl and for me there is something missing a groove or bead to define the bowl would make all the difference.
Just my opinion for what it is worth

Hi George ... Under normal circumstances would probably agree with you...... but and its a big but they wanted it plain with no
embellishments, we gave them the option to live with it a while and if not happy to return. Its not come back yet :) :) :)
The other thought was with it being such a large bowl the definition line could go a bit wonky as the wood moves over time.
  Kind Regards

I would be interested to know how you finished the bottom of it - ie jam chuck it or in what order did you turn it
Still love it!

Hi z3ddie..... Both sides was turned on the lath, then turned  round and held with tail stock to do the foot.
Hope this helps and pleased you still like it.

Tony, Di,

A great piece of timber, well turned and very well finished, but I'm afraid I'm with George, it's lacking a defining feature to bring it to like.

The transition from the outer rim to the bowl portion is a little like what a learner would do, letting the tool do the work, something you are far beyond.

Having said that, I do note your response to George and understand your reasons for leaving the work at this stage of finish.

 Well George & Bryan,
If you both had a customer who wanted a large bowl with no embellishments would you tell him he should have a bead defining
the bowl? if the customer got what he wanted and was happy then Tony was correct no matter what anyone else thinks. ;D ;D

                                                 Regards John

Hi John

I never make anything to order and never take commissions so it does not apply to me I only do what I want to do and the way I want to do it.
