Elm again....
« on: April 06, 2015, 06:27:24 PM »
Think I'm getting the hang of bottoms....

Quite pleased as this about the first properly planned piece and it actually came out as intended.  C&C welcome as always...

Hi George, there's a very subtle bottom that just settles it. In the first picture it's sitting naturally with no assistance.

Hi Chris...from this point onward you will be known as the 'Bottoms Man'! I think you've done a great job and the footless approach really suits this piece.

Chris,

your comment about getting the hang of bottoms had me looking into the form as we generally refer to the bottom of the bowl, and outside is the base or foot.

After that you tell George that the base has a very small area it settles on, it must be because even from the inverted photo, I can't make out the area (base) you refer to. Is it really stable on it or does it move/ rock while settlingt.

By the by, there is nothing wrong with the finish and the form is good as well.

I will say that the one thing with natural edge forms is that the thickness is even, at least as far down as just past the lowest part of the edge, so that it looks balanced. If it gets thicker at any point the illusion can be spoilt.

OK, bottoms, bases, feet.....I'll try and get the hang of it  ;D

This pic might show the bottom base better.....it settles reasonably well and quickly.  I'd live it to be fully rounded and balanced so that it just sits like that but don't have the skills to do that (yet).

I've been learning how easy elm is to cut and finish.....yesterday I tried a piece of very well seasoned and very dry/hard field maple.  Lovely wood, cuts fine, but getting a good finish with no sanding marks is the devils own job.  Given up three times so far.  Won't give up though, it's a lovely wood.....
