Oak H/F
« on: March 05, 2015, 10:15:34 PM »

The Oak H/F is turned as always by Tony..... It was then pierced and burned using the burr and cracks in the piece.
The top is cast, textured and turned pewter. and the oak is bleached.
    Comments welcome  Tony Di

I am still thinking about the bleaching but the combination of shapes, piercing and materials is superb.

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thank You Very  Much  Graham...... We had an idea for a plinth which we made first.... Then Tony turned a H/F to suit.
Unfortunately there was not enough contrast so we decided to bleach it.
   Kind Regards

I like the hf, but not sold on the plinth because I feel that it's a little too dominant. Maybe, if it were viewed from the right-hand-side the plinth would appear less imposing - but what I do like about the cantilever arrangement is that the plinth effectively offers the hf up to the viewer.

Thank You Les ..... You have seen the image we envisaged when making the plinth/base the piece sitting on the cantilever
and been offered up.  Sorry the photos don't do it justice ....... Camera back on charge and with a bit of look I will be able
   to post another view later.

Steve..... Thank You Very Much..... Much appreciated   Di and Tony

sorry i should have stated what it was about the piece.

i do actually like the base as it reminds me of a bare bit of metallic rock that we could easily see in a hollywood blockbuster, it's actually the finishing of the hollow form.

i've never been a fan of bleaching timbers as i like the look of natural wood.

i think the thing i really don't like is the scorching as to my eyes it just looks like someone has gone over it with a fag end ruining a lovely bit of work.

please don't misunderstand me, i think the work you guys come out with is of a very high standard and think most of it is top notch but for me this piece is not one i'd put on my mantle piece.

sorry.

Again I like this, it's hard for me to think of anything that the pair of you have done that I've not liked  :)

Must give bleaching oak a try one day

Thank You Very Much Terry.... Ed Much Appreciated.
The bleach is called vita bleach  A (1 ) .....B (2). It tends to work better on high tanning wood the best, and it  only goes
skin deep and its shelf life is 3 to 6 months. Try samples as always.
The piece is not quite as white as we expected because the bleach we have is at the end of its use by date.
  Hope this helps

Another View..... its taken most of this morning and I still can`t seem to get it to look as light weight as the piece is. I did
ask Tony if we could carve some more off the coral ..... He said no too much like granite.
