Rough value ?
« on: December 19, 2014, 08:03:29 PM »
A while back, a local ( to me ) turner admired an Ash crotch bowl I had made and remarked , next time you have any such wood to give him a call so I said OK, I now have access to a lot of Ash with some nice forks and was wondering what sort of value a 20" dia 6" thick green wood blank of Ash with nice flame figuring and a good mixture of sap and heart ( olive ) wood , would be ?  ( I have never bought blanks myself , and have not seen such pieces available anyway ,so have little idea what it's value may be !)

green wood is (or should be) about £15ft3 so work it out from that. going by this the 20"x6" disc should be £20 max.

might be interested in a couple if you have any spare?

One way of looking at it is to calculate the volume....you've got well over 1 cubic feet of timber in that lump. Then ask yourself what you'd have to pay for green ash.

I can't imagine any of the established turning-blank suppliers letting a lump like that go under £20 - £25 green....a lot more seasoned.

Yikes, TWiG...that second one's got to be the most amazing piece of timber I've seen in a very long time...what a stunner!

[/quote]No my name is Terry.... my mate has got a dog called Twiggy ! TWiG is derived from my initials .. sort of !  Yes the colours are fantastic aren't they , especially when so fresh , I have some larger forks ( 3-4 foot dia ) to get at yet but I do not think they will contain the contrast of sap-heartwood .. just heartwood I suspect . but you never know until you cut it !!

You'd have to be mad to get rid of wood like that!. As you say it doesn't grow on trees you know. Be interested to see how much the colours change in time, even if they do fade it will still be a spectacular piece.

Ash is boring.
Ash is boring.
I keep telling myself but it isn't sinking in.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
