I considered ordering one, but it looks like they no longer supply the 1.25"x8 thread that I'd need for my Maxi1 lathe.

The reason for the reduction is because it is the end of the line and they are not making them any more, they are changing over to the SK range.   They did the same thing with the goliath chucks when they brought out the SK114 chuck.

So what is the difference between the clubman and the SKs ?

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

the sk chucks are supposed to be turned out to higher tolerance so are more accurate but we are wood turners, do we really need that high an accuracy in the chuck when we are doing the cuts?

I was wondering if it was just the S ( in SK ) standing for 'Stainless'

the new SK clubman chucks are made in stainless steel,as the old ones were nickel plated and they were having trouble with the plating putting the tolerances out and throwing the chucks off alinement etc;with the new stainless steel chucks they can reduce the tolerances for a more accurate chucks in centricity, the higher cost is because stainless steel costs more than the plated steel they were using before, and as stated the cheaper deal chucks are the old design, not the new stainless steel ones, cheers,

Eric.

I don't know why they went to all the trouble of plating them anyway! The older chucks weren't plated so it wasn't a problem! Yes I know there are people who insist on leaving their equipment to rust in cold damp workshops but that's their problem!  ;)

But on a more serious note, there seems to be a trend for replacing "adequate" and moderately priced equipment with higher priced alternatives. I guess the suppliers can make a higher margin on goods which are more expensive but it's all at our expense!

Trouble is that most modern replacements, though at a higher price, are NOT of a higher quality. Though the SK chucks may well be an exception, I am very happy with mine.

In January 2013 I purchased a new lathe from Axminster it was the AT 1416VS the purchase of this lathe I have never regretted Unfortunately because

I was going from a spindle thread 1" x 8 tpi to a thread of M33 X 3.5 so I had to purchase 2 new chucks these were the K10 100mm at this time they

were £85:00 each and they have been great no run out or any other problems hence why I am getting another which will be delivered tomorrow

(Monday) so the price I am paying £56:00 is pretty good, I sold my old chucks to Paul H so all in all I am more than happy.

Regards John & a Happy Christmas to you all may your stockings be filled with woodturning Goodies   ;D ;D

when i bought my jet 3520b i got 3 k10 100 chucks as part of a deal. one to use with the c jaws, one to use with the mega jaws and one to make my own jaws for. i then found an ebayer selling one so got a cheap body and then saw that the goliath chucks were on sale (if i'd known it was the end of the line i'd have bought more) so bought one for the 400m plate jaws. i now have 4 k10 100's and one goliath (soon to be two thanks to Mr Hannaby) and can not fault a single one of them.

i too don't know why they end a perfectly good chuck for something that is no better.

if it ain't broke don't fix it.
