I cannot make out what it is ???

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Really interesting. Have you dug it out? Is it Brass? Would be great to see what it is once you do dig it out, if you do.

I sometimes find stones grown into trees that I have felled, and that old classic the 6 inch nail, the other day as I was gouging a bowl out of a piece of burl I cut off some blackthorn I was wondering "what would happen if there was a stone in this?

I can't decide if you have gone to deep and through your blank and are being sarcastic or if you genuinely found this inside a blank.

...I was reading a book about how the Morgan car company makes their cars. They went through a few years where their stock of ash, which they use for making the body-frames, came from Northern France and finding bullets and shrapnel was a common occurrence.
