Cant stop smirking
« on: October 19, 2014, 10:48:06 AM »
I think this is what is known as a bit of a gloat  ::)
As mentioned elsewhere, I went to the Axminster shop in Basingstoke yesterday and while there I treated myself to a Jet 3520b lathe. With 10% off plus a free Evolution chuck and jaws it was the equivalent of nearly £500 off. Couldn't resist. They say it takes 2 to 3 weeks for delivery, It's going to be  long wait ( for a big weight :) ) Still, it gives me time to reorganise the workshop to accommodate its different working style. :D ;D

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

just make sure you have a second person there for when you put the headstock on mate. putting the bed and legs together is ok but that headstock almost weighed too much for me, i'm 6'3" and 17stone of muscle so unless you are the same get a second person.

what did you end up paying for the lot?

On delivery I was about to say "it's on a slow boat from China" then it lists In stock and ready for dispatch ... http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-3520b-heavy-duty-woodturning-lathe ... good deal you'd had there, not the coffee thrown in free too...  :o ..

are you going to get the bed extension?
I am not sure yet, I don't intend doing much long spindle stuff so theoretically shouldn't need it but I like hollow forms and MAY get a hollowing rig which MAY need extra bed length.

We will see. One thing at a time

It should be able to manage the odd eggcup or two without to much strain.  :)

i don't do any long spindle stuff either but the tail stock gets in the way for my money plus the extra length just puts it in to proportion for me.
took a while before i bought it but i wouldn't be without it now mate.

i like turning large bowls so most of the time i have it mounted lower down ready for those whopping great blanks if i can get hold of them...

by the way, it can manage more than an eggcup...

my record at the moment is a 28"x7" walnut that weighed 70kg. it handled it fine...

I was thinking Ostrich eggs  :)
When turning normal sized bowls with the headstock slid along so yo are turning at the end of the lathe.... doesn't the lower extension get in your way ?

not really. i've not got a free standing tool rest so you need the extension to put the banjo on. most of the time because of the diameter of the large bowl you're turning far away from the bed rather than the center of a bowl so the extension is not impeding your stance.

when turning a normal bowl i tend not to slide the headstock along but do it the other end over the bed. this is probably because at a moments notice ill need to use it for turning skittles so need to keep it ready.
