wood dye's
« on: May 22, 2014, 09:00:14 PM »
I dyed an Ash bowl today with Liberon blue water based dye ( in small screw top glass jar )... was pleased with the result and colour , however when I applied finishing oil most of it came off ! has any one else done this ? are spirit dyes better ? ... advice would be welcome ,as I am new to dyeing and have many ideas in my head as to what I want to achieve but would like to minimise trial and error !!.... thanks .. Terry..

I would advise leaving any dye a couple of days before applying anything to it. Others may know different but my experience has been the same as yours. Touch dry isn't really dry.

Twig,

I have the water based dyes, I bought them and tried them years ago, they're still in the back of a draw somewhere.

Spirit stains are another story, I bought the trial pack and liked them so much bought the 1/4 ltr bottles. I use them under most finishes, especially oil, but as Pete says, you have to let them dry before applying any finish,

This is an old piece I stained and posted once, spirit stain and danish oil.

Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

I don't normally like dyed wood but it really works on that vase.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

To minimise problems with finishes on top of dyes you could use spray finishes.  I have been using acrylic sanding sealer spray over spirit stain to stabilse and then applying another finish after that.
