Yew Vase

Hi folks,

More time in the workshop, who a lucky boy then!

So I found a log of Yew, decided not to reduce its diameter and take out all of the unevenness of the growth, went with the hollows and opened them up to round off the edges.

The dark line in the last pic is a crack, as I'd been past The Toolpost and picked up some brass dust, so I filled it with a brass/epoxy mix.

Its 220mm (8.8") x 135mm (5.4") finished in sanding sealer and carnuba.

Wow, Bryan....I bet that was fun. Great to see so much sapwood....any chance of a peep down the inside?

Very nice, it always amazes me how different Yew can look depending if it's heartwood,sapwood,branchwood with all the pips etc.
I wouldn't mind a peep inside as well?

I had a yew vase on the lathe today all hollowed out just giving the outside a final fine cut and the thing split in two with the top of it hitting me in the chest....

Bryan, That is one nice piece of Yew, I hope as it's on the hearth, with it just being turned and given the crack, any sudden temperature change won't cause it to crack any more, shame to loss it now.

the fireplace is filled with Yew & Laburnum branch wood for show (one day they will be wooden fruits), the chimney is blocked up, if she lights it, she’s in trouble in more than one way!

I can't see what you want to see inside the yew vase for, but here's a couple of shots. Not easy, The flash throws too much shadow and I can't stand in front of the kitchen light as I cast too much shadow!

So I hope you can see what you're wanting.

We just wanted to make sure that you'd sanded it properly!

Not really, Bryan....I always like to look inside pierced work like this...whether the piercing is natural or man-made. It gives a different perspective and I was intrigued to see how the heartwood looked.

I wondered if it was the heartwood you were interested in.

I could see from the log that there was very little which is one of the reasons I left it as full as I did, allowing the character of the timber to form the holes, and give it an interest I could not get from the woods natural colour otherwise.

If I didn't know better I'd think this was one of my pieces, holes, bits of bark etc. I have to say lovely piece now don't I. Not hard though as it is.

I suppose I consider myself a technical turner.  I really admire other peoples work like this, but apart from a few natural edge pieces, it is my first foray into the realms of leaving the wood to speak for itself so much.

But from the response it's had, even SWMBO really like it, it might not be my last.

Now it will be down to the customers and how fast it finds a new owner.
