Rotten timber.
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:20:08 PM »
This is a bowl made from highly spalted and almost rotten timber, it is either walnut or horse chestnut ( a "Friend" gave it to me as a challenge, The bottom of the bowl was so rotten I had to remove it. The meant turning it into a footed bowl. I had to use loads of sanding sealer to prevent end grain tear out. The finish is several coats of Danish oil.
Comments welcome.

John, That is an excellent save, it is a very highly spalted piece, you've worked well with what you had to play with, an I trust you are still both friends after this.

Thanks for all your comments. Most welcome.
I did post two other views of the bowl but they seem to have disappeared into the ether

Hi John,
a nice piece of wood and well done.
Myself I prefere to turn simple shapes from such a nice grained wood.
For instance this shape as below. My slogan:
nice grain - simple shape
no grain - decorations
Take care John and many chips.
