What's more beautiful ?
« on: August 03, 2013, 08:18:59 AM »
Hi all,
what's more beautiful, the natural wood or the black-light form ?
The black-light one is titled: Black Hole !
What's your opinion ?

Greetings
Jo

I don't think you can say either is more beautiful than the other. Both are beautiful in different ways. Others may feel that one is better than the other but as they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Hi Jo

Nice work.

I like both of them for different locations. It may be worth adding black to the carving of the natural wood form to define them a bit more against the wood grain and to add a visual point. However this also may totally mess it up, perhaps one to experiment with.

Thanks for sharing, I like them very much.

Beauty, as Pete has said, is in the eye of the beholder & both are of interest.

For me personally the beauty of well turned wood is in the main the wood it is turned from & the form of the piece. Whilst I have no objection to some decorating & colouring on pieces they no longer hold an appeal as woodturning to me when, because of the decorating, they could be mistaken for pottery, plastic or another medium.
That`s certainly not to say such pieces are not of a good quality or indeed worthy pieces, they are, it`s just not what I personally want from woodturning.

Cheers.

Hi Jo, long time no see.

The Black & White one is very dramatic and certainly makes it's presence felt and for that is interesting.

The wooden one shows it's form though the grain pattern it reveals and would look differently (naturally) if made in different woods. But in showing itself to be wood begs the observer to wonder how it was done, something you'd want to pick-up and examine.

Hello Joe, I prefer the natural wood every time although both are stunning pieces of work looking at the picture the black and white could be ceramic or any other material. Regards John

Hello Jo,
good to hear from you again.
I prefer the natural wood finish primarily because it appears warmer and more welcoming than the black which appears to be from a harsher beginning. (?)
Nice work though.

Hi Jo,

What's more beautiful ????  Ask a Turner ..  ;) .. most can't get pass the B&R..  So the natural, it's wooden plain to simple .. the others no less of a material but for a mask of colour .. paint, stain or dye ... Pottery is no less for colour, it still is only clay, still a form on it's own ... So what is it any one of us sees, a form, art too most .. and it's wood .. really !!!

I like them equally, they make the statement well and you surpass the B&R and push us too think beyond the plain spun wood.

Good as always to see your work.  Is the reverse the same.

Cheers   David

Hai all,
yes, as you already said. It is the feeling of each other, depending on many moments and moods. Myself I like the wooden form. She is warm and shows also our unique material wood in its beautiful structure.
David yes, the reverse is equal to the front.
Cheers

If you put the brown one on sale for 90 euros and the black one for 100 euros my guess is the black one would sell first.

Well I didn't see that coming.

I saw either a freestanding shape or maybe two working as bookends.

Hi all,
I forgot, the arrangement must be integral, of corse.
