It's not all bad news. There appears to be at least on tree genome that is resistant to Ash Die back disease.

Countryfile did an interesting piece last Sunday where if I heard it correctly they are at least 2 initiatives. One to look at the DNA of resistanttrees with a view to Genetic Engineering a resistant strain. Secondly an initiative to plant a great many saplings near an infected area with the hope that the naturally resistant trees grow to maturity.
