I think you came up with a very clever solution to the problem of turning these.

I'll bet you had a few words with yourself turning 20 balls all the same size though!

John, I can't but complement you on them, 20' .. were there a few spares .. fine kerf cut slot .. table or bandsaw .. pre-cut in blank before turning !! Would the slot been a little better with slightly more of an angle, tip the card back, look straight down at it, if on a table than bending to see it...  works well as they there done.

Thank you for sharing.     David

Hi David,
I cut 20 base blanks(92mm Square) and 22 ball blanks The card slot was cut in the square, I used my bandsaw. The bases were held in my mega jaws, a recess was formed and the outside diameter was cut part way through using a 6mm round skew (on edge)
Jaws changed to O'Donnell and the ball blank attached, The lower half of the sphere and a 10mm spigot formed. Next the bases remounted in the O'Donnell jaws The edges were shaped and a 10mm hole for the spigot was drilled. This was then glued into the base and the sphere was turned to completion Sanded and polished with Danish oil. As the holders were for use at committee meeting the cards had to be read from a sitting position hence the angle selected. Hope the answers your queries.

Cheers for the reply, John, You'd done as I'd thought, pre-cut the slot with the bandsaw given the fine kerf and done as per order.

They were pleased with the work it is hoped.   David

And did you need the extra 2 ball blanks?
