Im thinking of buying a generator

So I'm thinking of buying a generator as I am fed up with hiring/borrowing/begging for one when I do outside demos at fairs.
       How do I work out what size jenny I need to run one or maybe two lathes and lighting etc?
It needs to fit in the boot.

Hi John  --  I used to have a Honda 2kw Genny for doing field work (non wood related) the equipment was about 700w so about 1Hp (standard Lathe Perhaps) and the fuel tank was about 5L and lasted 4 hours. They are quite noisy as well, the very quiet ones will only run a few hundred watts. I suppose you really need an ex-surplus diesel one that the road workers use to run their traffic light systems, You could run a lathe and boil a kettle with these I've no idea where you would get one though. Hi John, Very interseting question .. It's a cast of the Amps anyone piece or mutipole need not just to run, but the startup current as well.

If you've used sets in the past you'll know about what size KVA you'll need.

I'm not overly sure if as Julcle suggests that a TLS would work, we found at a slow set constant speed at which they worked they would need regular decokes with a diesel.

My understanding is have a look at the decibel so it doesn't deafen you when running, I was told today that Lidl have a powerful generator on sale at a remarkable price how good I don't know but worth a look

John,

the only advice I can offer is a word of experience.

If you have a small, preferably with high (or extended height) sides, trailer run the Genny inside it.

It keeps 'Fingers' out of it and more importantly adds an additional level of 'muffling' to the exhaust noise.
