Divide 'n' Conker
« on: March 10, 2011, 03:00:21 PM »
The task was set to make something using Egg as a theme, the usual first thoughts I put aside and asked myself what is an egg, I concluded it is the vessell where a new beginning starts, I loooked to nateure and decised to make a Conker in its shell.

The shell is truned as a hollw form then a section around the opening is cut away, the inside wa bleached but did not come up as white as I wanted si used acrylic paint, in reality it is not as white as in the pic, too much flash I think. The spikes are 4mm dowel inserted into shallow drill holes spikes on the sanding belt. The the holw this was airbrushed with acrylic paints, first yellow then a thin coat of green over th top. A mix of paints to get the browm effect which was dappled on with the end of a stiff brush. The tem is hand carved from a piece of Chestnut. It measures 4" diameter and stands 9" tall.

The Conker itself is a turned piece of Cocobolo using the sap wood as the natural crown of the fruit, then hand carved to give a few imperfections. £2 diamter and 2" high.

It's a cracking (no pun) piece, Martin. I love it. My only complaint is that you've photographed it on Oak leaves!

Hi Andy,

I know they are the only leaves I could get from my garden. and I could not be bothered to hunt locally for a chestnut and forage for leaves.

Cheers Martin.

This is a winner, you'd not lose with this one in a contest..  if only you could still play conkers.
Excellent detailed work, so real.

Hi Martin

This is a good example of looking at nature and using this as a theme.

More good work, well done.

Hi,

I saw this completed 'for real' last night at the club evening - it is a real corker (conker!)
