Small burr bowl
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:02:53 AM »
Had a pile of oak burrs, just a couple lof small ones left so had a play with one yesterday. It's 13" max length and the bowl is 5" diameter. All crevices in the bowl have been filled with red glass. The bark was lightly charred to get rid of the 'hairy' bits first and then heavily buffed with tripoli wax to polish the bumps. C&C welcome as always.

Oh yes!  Like this a lot, love the effect on the bark.  Nice contrast with the bowl and the glass gives a nice contemporary feel.

I would have liked it more if the groove had of been continues Pete. That would have meant it needed to be deeper but I think it would have looked better

Great idea to char the burr before turning; it gives an even greater contrast between bowl and surround. Have to agree with George that a continuous rim might have added even more to the piece.

Thank you all for the comments and critique. I did wonder about going deeper but it would have meant losing some of the bark. In hindsight perhaps it would have been better. It doesn't look quite so haphazard in real life but still might have  been better being continuous. Be a bit difficult to remount now unfortunately.

Pete,

Red Glass, I assume it's a ground up powder, not beads or somesuch.

Whatever it brings a very loud splash of colour to the work, especially against the now darkened bark of the un-turned burr.

As ever I see something more, if the red (and yellow glass) were in the base of a burr like this, you'd definitely think of a volcano with a magma chamber - just a throw away idea.

Thank you Bryan, we are on the same wavelength with the lava idea. I recently read an articl;e about the value of namimg ylour work and something along the lines of lava came to mind. The red isn't in your face too much and looks like the hot lava while the burr bark looks like the solidified lava you get around the crater. Not my original idea when making it but one that is worth oursuing.

I tend to agree with George about the groove. But still a fine piece.

The red glass is very effective Pete ..... It almost looks natural colouring.
