Marquetry inlaid boxes
« on: May 27, 2015, 10:07:46 AM »
I have recently started turning and am particularly interested in combining my previous hobby of marquetry with wood turning. After much experimentation I have managed to inlay simple marquetry pieces into the lid of a few boxes as in the examples below. With the marquetry being only 0.6mm thick it requires careful scraping out of a recess - if not deep enough then there is a real danger of subsequent sanding cutting through the marquetry design! So far so good - interestingly the production of the marquetry insert takes much longer than the turning of the box. The two examples are American cherry.

Mendip,

welcome to the forum and thank you for your first posting.

It's always good to see the different ways people embellish their work, especially when they bring it from other areas of expertise and adding value to their work.
