Recycled Skittle Pin
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:43:46 PM »
A couple of weeks ago I was given a couple of worn out Skittle pins and this is one of them turned into a pair of Bowls
They have still got a few chips and dinks out of them but I think they are all the better for it.
Traditionally Skittle pins in this area were made from Apple but these are sycamore.

I do hope that you used your bowl-saver and took the cores out first!

i wonder if any of my pins will end up like that in ten years time?

george,

pins are traditionally made from sycamore or beech. the only reason that quite a few sets were made from apple was because we cut down all our orchards between the wars and for some reason lots of people think that they were always made from apple .

good use of an old pin though.

George,

Nice idea, thinking well outside the box,

I was given a 10 pin the other day to turn. Awful thing, covered in a plastic dip which I has to turn off (it went everywhere in long streamers), not even any good for anything when I got down to the wood as it was all 1" sq laminations. Still it was wanted as a bowling prize at an Alley in Bristol, and they were happy with it.

Steve,

maybe you'd better ask for any old ones as part payment for your new sets.

bryan i do take sets of lignum balls as part payment but the pins are not worth it.

you surprise me by saying that the tenpin pin was 1" squares as when i cut one in half 7-8 years ago i was presented with laminations yes, but in 5"x1" section not 1" squares. they must be running out of suitable wood in the larger size.

got any pictures of the finished pin?
