So I'll start another thread for discussion...

Do we need a Library in the Forum?

By that I mean a place where links can be provided to useful items such as Safety Data Sheets, albeit on the manufacturers site.

Such as for Chestnut Cellulose Thinners (see the bottom of the table) - http://chestnutproducts.co.uk/popup.php?ProductName=Cellulose Thinners

Or otherwise obtained documents can be stored, for example the SDS for Xyline obtained by MCB.

Only if it's easy to use and find the items filed there.

I  belong to a Professional Body whose web site is  so slow and complicated that I  refuse to have anything to do with it.

As you've already demonstrated, the chestnut website have all their documents freely available and many of the other manufacturers do the same because it saves them time.

If you set up a separate library, how are you going to ensure you keep it up to date?

Personally, I think rather than documents held elsewhere, links to the manufacturers own library is the way to go.

Hi I agree with Paul if I want to know information like this I look it up  for myself and as Paul said you need someone to update this information so we

are not giving members outdated information which can be worse than none at all. Regards John

There could be another side to this too, if the AWGB supplied information through their website, albeit from another source, and something happened who would be culpable? Whereas if the information comes straight from the manufacturer or wholesaler it is up to them to ensure it is up to date and correct for the product sold.

Though the idea sounds good initially it means someone has to keep it up to date with all the potential problems aforementioned. As companies have to have the info available it isn't that difficult for those who wish to know to find out. With the speed that things change nowadays it would be a never ending job.

I can see the library as being a good idea to help woodturners but would have it's problems.

But the AWGB could host a resource centre where it points woodturners to the information held on the various sites, this list could be compiled by the pages we have bookmarked.

So it would be something like data on finishing products and then links to page that hold this information.

Just an idea

The Xylene data sheet that I  obtained from the manufacturer was NOT on a website so a list of resources would  NOT have been helpful in this case.

Then I have misunderstood what has been posted recently.

I  understood subscribers to be saying that since datasheets might be out of date it would  be better to have a list of URLs pointing to the web page where information could  be obtained.

If somebody wants to put  the Xylene datasheet somewhere that it can be obtained, he or she is  invited to send a message to Xylene@hardknott.org and I'll  attach it to my reply.

With best wishes.

In my opinion, the best 'library' available is the internet and search engines. In this case just google (other search engines are available) 'Xylene safety data sheets' and you will get all the information you could ever want. Simple!!

The “Universal Thinners” for which I  obtained the Data Sheet is  less than 50% Xylene so searching for Xylene Data Sheets would  NOT be a solution. Nor would  searching for Baufix Universal Thinners because other subscribers were unable to find that.
