In response to Pete about holly
« on: April 21, 2013, 12:54:48 PM »
For some reason, I couldn't load a couple of images into a thread that Pete started about holly, so am trying to get a new thread started.

I picked up some trunk end-cuts today off some well matured old trunks that have been lying around for years. They're a bit 'ripe' in places and there'll be loads of firewood amongst it, but there's a huge lump of holly, easily 6 cu ft which we had to cut into 3 pieces just to get it home. Just look at the colour in it!

All-in-all, there's about a dozen big lumps of elm, ash, sycamore, holly and oak.....and more available when I'm ready.

By the way...if any member lives close enough to Bala to call in and advise me about how best to cut and store this stuff, there's a cube in it for him!

I think it is disgraceful that a new turner should get his hands on wood like that. ......Just kidding....and jealous.

P.S. I was asked today if I could use chestnut as someone has a dead tree that they have to fell. Hmmm....what to say?

Turners don't make mistakes, they have design opportunities

I just got a load of sweet chestnut before Christmas, really stunning stuff, cream, chocolate brown, and flecks of green running throughout, roughed about half of it, but still have a load sealed and drying behind my workshop, it's the first time I ever turn it, but if I get offered any more I will snatch there hands off  ;D
