Title: Horticulture trophy
Post by: oldfern on March 20, 2021, 11:34:35 AM
I thought I would add a few photos to this gallery. This one is a trophy for a horticultural show, made in walnut, about 11 inches diameter by 12 inches tall. It was made for a man who wished to commemorate his father's contributions over the years.
The veg is turned from various timbers, mainly natural colours, the only stain being a little green to tinge the spring onion leaves. Larch, spalted beech, oak, purple heart, padauk, box, laburnum. The carrot and parsnip leaves are leather.
Sealed with cellulose sealer, then buffed with Tripoli, white diamond and carnauba.

That's beautifully done, and no doubt made someone very happy.
Makes a change from the usual fruit bowls, and I'm impressed by the use of natural colours.
Yet more to add to the "some day" let list!

A question - are the fruit/veg glued in place?

No the vegetables are all loose. The customer didn't actually ask for veg, just the trophy. I just added them because I thought they would improve the trophy. When the customer saw them he said yes please. I don' think they need to be fixed.

I think they look great too!  And I suppose it depends how you use the trophy - if it is to be carried through the city in triumph fixing might be a thought...

Somehow I think a smile and a nod over a cup of tea is more likely than an FA Cup style open top bus ride.

Would I be wrong to say I like the humour in this piece, it beats there being another 'Silver' cup to be awarded.
