As the title says, what is the consensus for the best finish for teak please.
Or what finished would I be best avoiding.
-
I have only used a bit of teak and (perhaps thoughtlessly) just finished by buffing with carnauba wax. Teak ks pretty oily anyway I understand so not sjure putting other oils etc on it would work.

Teak oil !

Teak oil !
Funny you should say that! I carved a house number out of Teak and finished it with teak oil and it survived outside in the rain for years until we moved. It may even still be there?
-
Sorry, maybe I should have said. It is for indoor use and Teak Oil, or any oily finish is not appropriate.
-
I'd stick with carnauba or microcrystalline personally. Not sure lacquers etc would stick for long on an oily wood.

Thank you Pete. I think you are right.

Apparently you can use shellac on oily woods so applying shellac sanding sealer should give a good finish. Microcrystalline Wax on top of that if you want a bit more shine.
-
Thank you Bill. I have some eazy-shine somewhere, maybe I'll turn a piece of scrap to try this on.

Bryan,
You can soak the wood in cellulose thinners to draw out a lot of the oil, I have done it with Olive and Lignum and worked well, sealin finally witih Wax in my case Renaissance wax.
Cheers Martin.

Good idea, let us know how you get on.

Martin,
I know you can use acetone to do the same so you can glue teak. ghw teak has been chosen because of the oil in it, but a light wipe or 2, to give the wax a chance sounds like a good idea.
thanks
