Title: Solid brass fittings
Post by: Les Symonds on August 22, 2018, 07:08:06 AM
I'm looking for a supplier of solid brass hinges and catches for some small boxes that I'm making. These boxes are to be used in top-end restaurant for serving truffles, so quality needs to be high.
I've seen several "fancy" hinges and "mini-hinges", but although they're all advertised as brass, in reality they're electro plated. Does anyone know of a supplier of the right stuff?

Could try World of brass (https://www.worldofbrass.co.uk/), might be plated but worth asking.

Hello Les,
Try www.isaaclord.co.uk or www.johnlloydfinefurniture.co.uk both of whom supply high end solid drawn brass hinges.

Truffles in hinged boxes in top class restaurants has got me puzzled. Sounds like an expensive luxury.

Yep....and thankfully, I shall be taking the money for the box rather than paying the money for the truffles.

Do you know why they use a hinged box? I know tea caddies also had locks.

Hello Les

These are probably too expensive for your application but they are top-quality hinges, and very easy to fit.

They are all British and come with matching locks, if you need one for a different project. I am afraid he doesn't do simple catches.

Cheers - John

I wonder if we should start a page with all of these places on it? Could be quite useful in years to come.
