Title: Last big bowl for a while.

This one started off as a burr (unknowm wood) about 25" long and 18" wide. All lopsided and off balance. Turning was hard work as I had to go so slow and time was spent half cutting and half re-sharpening. Ended up also spendong as much time sandiong by hand as I did shaping so hope someone appercoates the cost when it goes up for sale. Won't be cheap LOL. C&C welcome as always

A lovely lump of burr, Pete...my money's on it being oak and I agree, sting 'em and tale their money off 'em because bits of wood this good don't crop up too often.

That looks like hairier turn than my pollard knuckle, must have been on hell of a ride.

Worth every bit of it though, love the finished piece.

Thanks. Not totally convinced kit's oak as it seemed a lot softer and the parts where there is no burr don't look like oak but oak comes in so many varieties and odd ball types it could well be.
Hard work Bryan but not too hairy as long as I kept the mask on to fend off the odd but of bark that decided it didn't belong LOL.

Thank ylou all. Could be Derek though chestnut IME is a lot softer than this was.

A lovely piece which makes the most of the material and shows it off to best advantage. It shows that plenty of thought has gone into the orientation of the blank on the machine to get the best end result. From the photograph my money would be on it being oak as both sweet and horse chestnut are very much lighter in colour and the burrs grow with different characteristics to this one.
