Title: Weird sharpening ??
Post by: Cornishchippy on March 29, 2018, 11:43:16 PM
Just a quick question to all of tge experts out there. Ive just bought a new lathe off of an 85 year old gentleman and he have me all his chisels the thing is the grinds seem to be the wrong way around ?? What I mean is the bevel is the right way but the wings are the longest point forward has anyone else come across this? I'll add some pics soon to show you all.

I'm frightened to envisage what you are describing.

Any chance of a photo please.

I think that I understand what you're saying, in which case it's just too scary to contemplate....a photo is essential, but meanwhile, if what you're describing are bowl and spindle gouges, don't use them.

I often come across this type of grind when I do my talks on sharpening. It seems to stem from people watching Youtube clips but not understanding how a tool cuts, nor the importance of the tools cutting edge profile. It will be interesting to see some pics from Cornishchippy but I suspect the tool will look to have two horns protruding at the top of the flute. This happens if the tool is sharpened on a flat bed, and just rolled from side to side,  without letting it move forward to grind the sides of the flute. Unfortunately the method of rolling the tool WILL work fine if you understand the profile you need, so it's not the method at fault, it's the end user.
Having said that, it's good to see that Cornishchippy has raised this BEFORE trying to use these tools. As others have said, I dread to think of the results if he had.

I agree with George, this is what I saw in my minds eye from your description.

Someone did not know what they were doing, they probably gave up turning because they could not stop getting 'catches'.

Regrind them properly and they'll serve you well.

Cornishchippy there are plenty of good woodturners in your part of the country (assuming you are in Cornwall)who can give you solid advice on sharpening your tools. As the comments here say they are dangerous to use without being correctly profiled. Perhaps you should join a club or consider having lessons from a professional tuner.

There is a club that meets at the Wheal Jane mine at Baldhu. Used to have regular nights of tuition and was a friendly club. Their website is here (https://cornwallassociationofwoodturners.co.uk/) if you want to check them out.

I'm doing ok this is my second lathe but I'm no means an expert the chisels just made me think is this some sort of secret trick that I was unaware of. Thanks for all the help. I have now ground them to my prefered angle and they're working just fine now

I saw a Simon Hope double ended chisel which had a grind similar to the one you showed in your picture.

Take a look at the right hand end of THIS ONE (https://hopewoodturning.co.uk/tools-handles/double-ended-gouges/60/crown-cyro-beading-tool?c=9)

Derek in case you are confused the tool is used the other way up than a normal gouge. In effect it is a scraper. Realistically if you learnt how to turn a bead you would not need this tool.

Derik,

Yep, that's a double ended tool. One end has the long/celtic/Ellsworth grind the other is commonly known as the Normal grind.

It looks like it has pertruding horns (badly ground) because of the photograph angle.

... "It looks like it has pertruding horns (badly ground) because of the photograph angle."

I think this comment could be applied to Cornishchippy's images.

To clarify and help end this to and fro exchange regarding the original gouges sharpened grinds, I think Cornishchippy needs to try taking a better image of the ends of his gouges.

Yes, they're looking better. I'd liked to have seen the images of the original grinds of the gouges taken from this angle though.

As the Bowler Hatted Turner suggested, it would be wise to attend one or two meetings of a local club (and join if it takes your fancy) to get some advice and see some demonstrations.

Hope you enjoy the world of woodturning.
