Title: Blackwood vase
Post by: Tony_a on March 04, 2018, 09:17:41 AM
This vase was turned from a rather ugly piece of crotch wood  with a large internal void, some rot and numerous grub holes. While this somewhat limited the options for turning I am quite pleased with the overall character of the  piece.
Vase is 130 mm tall by 120 wide and hollowed through the neck. Finish with Rustins Danish Oil and buffed with eee.

C&C welcome

Tony

A great example of beauty and the beast! Your vase has a line to it that flows well, despite the changes in shape from concave to convex. It's a good 'un.

I think it's safe to say this piece of wood had a very hard previous life.

Here's hoping that the new form you've given it finds it an easier next life in pride of place on someones display shelf.

Thanks Les, Georg, Derek and Dragonfly.

I agree that a piece of wood like this is telling us a bit about its previous life. As someone who works with wood I like to highlight the story the wood has to tell and not try to be too clever. Its about the wood, not me. There are other pieces of wood lend themselves to showing clever wood working skills.

My wife was keeping an eye on this piece as I turned it and wasn't completely sure about it until I applied the finish. She promptly put it under her arm and marched it over to the house. It now has pride of place on one or her displays.

Thank you Paul and Les. I'm fortunate in having access to this fantastic old blackwood timber. Can produce a stunning piece like this with mediocre skill levels.
