Title: Stourhead National Trust Timber
Post by: crazylegs on November 05, 2017, 02:37:26 PM
I was at Stourhead this morning. They are selling green sycamore (some splating) and green ash planks. Approx 8ft long 10 inches wide and 2 inches thick. £16 a plank.
I thought this was not a bad price. I got a couple of sycamore to dry out in the garage. Might be of interest to others near by.

Whats the best way to dry it out? Leave it as planks or cut it up into square bits ?

Leave it as planks. With square pieces, there's always a high risk of losing a few inches on either side to checking. If you leave it as planks, you only have two ends that can check.

Sycamore is best left in plank form and stood up

thanks for the tips. I have it stood up so it will stay where it is.

You might also want to treat the sycamore planks with a borax solution. Somebody on this forum suggested this when I got my hands on a lot of sycamore. Without the borax, there's a high risk of getting a fungal infect which will turn your sycamore from its nice blonde colour into a dull grey. Worked a treat for me.
