Title: Santa is buying me a new lathe
Post by: broadsea on October 30, 2014, 04:41:56 AM
Hi folks

Santa is going to bring me a new lathe. The problem is that there are so many on the market its confusing. Because of the limited space I have it will need to have a headstock capable of being turned through 90degrees. My lovely wife says that I can have £700 to spend. All my gear is for an MT1 fittings. Any suggestions?

Hi...great news! It will probably help this thread if you give us an idea of what sort of capacity you want to turn. What do you normally make? Is it long spindles, or bowls? Is it big platters etc.

I tun bowls and platters usually 12 to 13 inches is my range. Between the centres I do not do big items. The smallest are pens up to about 18" vases. I only started this year thats why I am unsure what to buy

I could suggest buying a secondhand Hegner HDB200XL It is a 2mt lathe of very good quality and you would have enough left over to replace your 1mt stuff.
Just so happens I have one for sale  :)

Justlooked on their web site. It seems to cover all the basis but how much are you asking, and it would have to be shipped by courier.

£500, including original extras like the pivoting control box arm, outboard turning attachment and two extra tool rests. But you should see it first. Where are you ?

Okay, I will try and take some today.
In the meantime this link is to a thread on the UK Workshop forum where I brought the lathe back in March this year.
http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/hegner-hdb200xl-lathe-for-sale-t78251.html

I should explain that I only took up turning this year and had set my heart on a big Jet lathe, but I am registered blind and did not want to spend that much money when I didn't know if I could see to do it. So I brought a good secondhand lathe to see if I could do it. I can so now I have just taken delivery of the lathe I originally wanted.

Hello,
I have a Hegner as described above. It has served me well for 10 years and still going strong. I teach woodturning in my workshop and the Hegner is my students lathe of choice.
I also have Two "Axi" trade range lathes, one large one smaller. For spindle work I always use the Hegner,  it also handles coffee table tops up to 28inches dia with no problem.
