Despite the possibility of a regular monthly challenge, which I am all in favour of, I am still fixated on the 6x3 blank challenge discussed briefly in the design and inspiration thread.
Simple description / rule = see what you can get out of a 6 inch by 3 inch bowl blank. Out of the box or lateral thinking encouraged.
This would possibly be just a one off but may also grow into something regular.
Anyone up for it ?
-
Hi Graham
I happy to play along with the 6 x 3
Ed
-
Excellent. Lets give it a while longer for others to join in then we can set a finish date.
-
I've got one 6" x (nearly) 3".
Lets see where it goes - any timeframe?
-
I will have a go,
John
-
I'll cut myself out a blank tomorrow
Ed
-
This is looking promising :)
Shall we give others a few days to see the thread and join in if they want then a month to do it. Finish date say August 4th ?
-
OK....I'm in!
One question, though....at what point do we post images of our finished items?
Les
-
If we are going to say the 4th of August is the finishing date then we should all post out finished pieces here on that date with a few pictures and some detail on what we have done.
Is my thinking
Ed
-
hi Les, what Ed suggests sounds right to me :)
-
OK....no probs with that. The USA-based forum of Woodturners Unlimited has a different approach, accepting photos immediately, which works for them. I guess the only important thing is that we shouldn't need too many rules, but equally, that we all need to know them.

Not being aware of competitions on other forums I need to ask a question.
In this challenge we are talking about a 6" x 3" blank, is that it?, or can I add something else, for example if I made a hollow-form could I make a finial from another piece of wood or would that cause it to be discounted.
-
At our club when we have a challenge like this we are given the blank and apart from glues finishes etc that what we had to use.
I hope this helps.
John

I think the idea is you make whatever out of just the 6 x 3 but there's nothing to stop you cutting the 6 x 3 up.
Ed
-
The original concept was that we have a 6x3 blank and see what we can 'get out of it', so just the blank. I am aware that this has already deviated from Mark Sanger's original idea but I think that is where we are at now :)
So, a 6x3 bowl blank but do what you like with it. Use it whole, chop it up and turn it into a spindle, chop it up and use all the bits. Give your inner self a treat. Blow our minds :)
-
Graham,
I would be happy to take up your challenge too.
Philip

Graham, got to look through my logbook as to having a piece that size, easier than turning out the stock bins.
6x3 blank .. need not be a bowl.
Cheers David
-
Graham,
I would be happy to take up your challenge too.
Philip
Welcome aboard Phillip.
-
Hi David. No, definitely doesn't have to be a bowl. Definitely doesn't have to not be a bowl either :)

Hi David. No, definitely doesn't have to be a bowl. Definitely doesn't have to not be a bowl either :)
Will have a reread the brief as to which Mark referred to as a blank .. it's normal as being the round.
Pity not to have Mark's own impart on the subject.
Cheers David
-
Hi I assumed that a blank could be square or round.
I've started my piece using a Square is this still OK.
When the time comes where will the photographs be posted. This link or gallery.

Mark is here today as we are running a two day hollowing course I will ask him he has gone to pick up a Chinese take away.
Regards George

In Marks original post he said
"So as an idea <cut>Why not lets think about what we can do with a bowl turned from a standard 6 inch dia x 3 inch bowl blank." So Mark was talking more about how you decorate or enhance a bowl.
We have moved on from this to a challenge 'what can be made from a 6X3 bowl blank. As far as shape is concerned..... I was picturing a round one but it was not specified so I guess a square one counts as well. it is still a bowl blank and final products rarely reflect the original blank shape.
Do we want this to be a (prize less ) competition ? If so then Mark might be persuaded to judge it.
Is Mark able to post here all the time ? I see he shows up as a 'guest'
-
Mark said it is up to you round bowl blank 6" dia x 3" thick or a spindle section 3" x 3" x 6" long, just see what you can come up with.
Regards George
-
Thanks for that George. I think we will stick with the 6 X 3 bowl blank, a spindle can be got from that anyway.
-
Just to remind everyone that we are half way to the July 4th deadline for entries to the challenge. Publish in the gallery .... Lets say between July 1st and 4th.

Think that we are well overdue those dates Graham LOL. I assume you mean August?
Pete

DOH ::) ::) ::) ::)
Yep, August 4th 2014
Thanks Pete
Which means posting entries in the Gallery between AUG 1st and AUG 4th !!
-
Best get turning then :)
Ed

they used too do challenges like this at my first club,Fairlop woodturners, the different things made out of a 10"x10"x2" ins piece of wood was marvelous,so have fun turning something, cheers,
Eric.

I've got the blank - anyone seen any spare time laying around?
Wife's got us working on the house the last few weeks, garage work is backing up terribly.
-
I don't know about you guys but I have only half a project done. It has been way to hot to get in the workshop just lately.
-
So far I've got the prototype made ... may just have to list that one .. main blank I have works out a tad small .. when I get to it... still time... ::) ..
-
I'm back to the drawing board my idea didn't work to well >:(
Ed
-
Lets extend the deadline for..... another month ?
It's not as if this were a competition.
-
I thought I might take the lead,
Here's my take on the challenge.
Its from a 6X3 oak square.
John
-
WOT no comments?
-
That is an intriguing shape John, I take it that it is 3 separate pieces, how tall is it ?
The more I look at it the more I like it.
-
Hi,
I assume this challenge is now dead.
John
-
It certainly looks that way. I know what I wanted to do won't work. The bowl I posted in the gallery was the basis of my entry but the rest of the idea kept buckling. I am still working on it as I think it has potential but it will take a while.
-
I still like the idea, I've still got my blank and the idea. Time is a little more available but I need to get to another turners workshop to do 'the magic bit'!
-
It's not all over yet ... Sapele the 6x3 think it should be called Half a bowl ..err half a job .. it is the prototype ...
-
OK, so it is still alive, just not working to any specific deadline :)
-
That's clever is it just turned?
Ed

Ed
Yes Ed, It's done as my take on the instructions I'd read on what had been the temporary site of WOW which has since been close.
For reference the means of turning should create the form 'Bowl Emerging' then it could be written the other way round..
Plans are to make it properly as a full half bowl ... some day. Cheers David
