Title: My first bowl (ish)
Post by: myatt1972 on March 30, 2011, 10:18:05 PM
Tonight I........

Found a log
Cut a blank
Turned my first bowl shaped item.

Its only small but its ok for a first effort, the Mrs thinks its lovely (bless her).
Don't even think of asking for a picture, I'll post one when I'm into double figures.

A very chuffed,
Keith...

Keith

Like the one on the left, the one on the right would look better with a smaller base.

Both have a good finish. Keep up the good work, you will get better each time you make a bowl.

I agree. The left vessel is the better looking. Straight sides aren't always appealing, but this one looks good.

The right hand one is suffereing from a very common new turner syndrome...the 45 degree wall...a product of allowing the tool to determine shape rather than the turner manipulating the tool to dictate the shape.

Having said that, to manage two vessels in your lunch hour at such an early stage is fantastic. Keep turning like that and you'll be way ahead of the game very soon.

And thanks for posting the pictures. I know how difficult it can be to put first attempts online for public viewing.

I hope the comments help in some way, but do remember most opinion is highly subjective.

Wow Keith.

Two well turned bowls in such short a time, well done on first off, excellent, nice finish, the design will get better.

If you do attend Mid-Staffs tomorrow night..  do bring them along for the show table, it would be hoped
you'd get some constructive advice, which can be given from a hands on touch and check for chuck mount..   ;D  ..
and Paul would no doubt take time to give a once over on them and sound advice.

Look forward to meeting you.

David
